After walking around for quite some time with our stomachs growling in The Gardens, finally we decided to visit this well-known Din Tai Fung restaurant. We were expecting the queue to be very long, instead we were seated without having to queue, perhaps it was a weekday.
Din Tai Fung is originated from Taiwan and it has outlets in the United States and many Asian countries.
The restaurant was clean and comfortable and it was packed with customers, mostly having family gathering.
The open kitchen concept allows us to take a good look at how the dumplings are made, this concept is also practised in Dragon-I Restaurant.
Since Din Tai Fung is so well-known for their pork dumplings (小笼包), we wouldn’t want to miss that out. This xiu long bao costs RM11 for 5 pieces. The dumplings were neatly folded and well-presented. But the taste wasn’t up to our expectation, the broth was flavourful but the skin was slightly too thick. We preferred Crystal Jade’s xiu long pao.
We decided to have rice instead of la mian the other day. It took us quite some time to decide what to eat because we felt that the menu was quite limited compared to Crystal Jade, there wasn’t many choices to choose from. Anyway, we decided to have this kungpao chicken (宫保鸡丁) for RM18. We were quite disappointed as the chicken was quite cold when served. The chicken tasted rather tender and tasty but we would prefer it to be slightly spicier as it is a Szechuan dish.
As bean curd is one of our favourite dishes, we decided to try their house special tofu (菠菜香菇豆腐) for RM15. Served with mushrooms and vegetables, the bean curd was smooth and delicious, we enjoyed this very much. A bowl of rice costs RM2. For our drinks, we had hot jasmine tea (中国茶) for RM2 per cup.
Overall the lunch was quite average. Perhaps it was because we gave them a high expectation for their xiu long bao. Somehow we would prefer Crystal Jade or Dragon-I compared to Din Tai Fung. But still, maybe we will return to give it another try, perhaps we would try out their la mian and other dishes.
