A post dated back to March 2008, when Sugar Bean had a date with Ai Wei. We were deciding where to have our lunch on a Sunday afternoon and decided to visit this steamboat restaurant which we love and visited countless times.
We were first introduced to this restaurant by our Chinese friends. As steamboat and spicy food lovers, we fell in love with this restaurant on our first visit.
The restaurant was pleasant and well air-conditioned so you don’t have to worry about getting too warm when challenging the spicy steamboat.
For our starters, we had Mongolian starch jelly sheet (蒙古拉皮) priced at RM4.80. This cold dish is our all time favourite, the jelly sheet was light and chewy, coupled with cucumber and carrot strips, it was definitely a good start for the fiery meal. Other than this, we also tried their vinegared jelly fish (老醋蜇丝) and dried bean curd (凉拌香干) which was really good too.
On the day of our visit, they were offering buffet priced at RM22.90 per person for lunch and RM29.90 for dinner. It was quite a good deal and we gave it a go. For RM22.90, we can order as many steamboat ingredients as we want as long as we can finish it. We had spicy soup and herbal soup (鸳鸯锅) so that we can have both at the same time. The spicy soup was layered with chilli oil and consist of dried chilli and other herbs to boost its spiciness. Be careful of chewing into the herbs, because it might numb your tongue!
The fermented bean and sesame sauce (豆腐乳) was prepared by the restaurant specially for the steamboat. Their specialty sauce was heavenly delicious when eaten with the lamb slices.
Their thin lamb slices (羊肉片) is one of the must-order item in their restaurant. It was fresh, thinly sliced and very delicious after it has soaked up the spicy broth. It was so tasty that we lost count of the number of plates of lamb slices that we ordered.
Though we have been here many times, it was our first time trying out their deer slices (鹿肉片). This too, tasted quite good, but we somehow prefered the lamb slices compared to their deer slices.
Fresh bean curd (鲜豆腐) is our favourite food of all time so we ordered it. Also, we had their frozen bean curd (冻豆腐) which is ideal for the spicy soup.
We had mushrooms (香菇) and other vegetables for steamboat. We had a great time having steamboat with Ai Wei, perhaps this is the best way to have steamboat, to have a good chat while taking your time to cook and eat. Service was quite good, but nothing to shout about. No doubt we would definitely revisit this restaurant in the future.
