Koon Kee Wantan Mee (冠记)

Posted by: Wen Ching In: Chinese Food

It has been ages since we were last at Petaling Street, otherwise known as Chinatown. Thus, we decided to head on over not too long ago to check out the food and the shops.

Koon Kee Wantan Mee
Running through the well-known food in Petaling Street in our heads, we simply couldn’t decide. It didn’t help that we were starving, so when we came across the famous Koon Kee Wantan Mee, our minds were made up!

Wantan Noodles, Koon Kee Wantan Mee
We ordered 2 plates of the wantan noodles and pictured above is the Char Siew Wantan Mee. The noodles here were nice and springy and the sauce for the dry wantan mee sauce was unique compared to many others. Emphasising less on dark soy sauce and maybe slightly more on sesame oil, it had a stronger sesame taste which was very enjoyable! The char siew on the other hand, were not anything special.

Wantan soup, Koon Kee Wantan Mee
The wantan noodles came with a small bowl of soup with wantan (Chinese dumplings). The wantan did not have anything special about them as well, but served its purpose well enough as an accompaniment to the noodles.

Ice Kacang
Following on from the wantan mee, we were not satisfied yet and felt like having some dessert. My better half brought me to the Madras Lane stalls inside the Petaling Street wet market for some ice kacang / air batu campur which she has had for many years. Priced at RM2.50, the ice kacang was delightfully sweet and cooling on a warm day. This bowl of ice kacang was so good that we felt one bowl wasn’t enough!

Overall, Petaling Street is always good for some long-established quality food. We tried the Air Mata Kucing as well which was a winter melon drink with longan and that was top class! A mini food excursion in Petaling Street is always enjoyable from time to time!

It’s been ages since we’ve been over that way too. Your post is making me want to take a trip sooner rather than later.
