Pick Me Up
Posted by: Wen Ching In: Dessert
Recently we were invited to sample the various offerings at a new dessert outlet in the Kuchai Entrepreneur’s Park called Pick Me Up which was established not too long ago, in December 2011.
Located on one of the main roads in Kuchai Lama, it was very easy to find. Look out for the café on the row opposite Wing’s Café and Mr D.I.Y. The café itself was bright and very welcoming, perfect for a casual hang-out spot with friends and family.
We tried many items from the menu that night and also one item which will soon be on the menu. To start, we had two types of Ice Cream Burritos – Mango and Banana. Both were priced at RM5.50 per roll. The soft pancake-burrito wrapped around sweet vanilla ice cream and crushed peanuts made for a delicious treat. Ours were stuffed with fresh mango pieces or banana pieces in addition to the ice cream. We enjoyed the burritos very much, but we personally prefered the banana over the mango.
Pick Me Up has a unique creation in the form of the Fruity Tower, priced at RM12.90. The top layer consists of blueberry shaved ice, followed by mango shaved ice in the middle and strawberry shaved ice at the bottom. In between these three layers was some vanilla ice cream to hold it all together. At the bottom, around the bowl, there were fresh mango piece, taro balls, pearls and nata de coco. Designed to be shared, the medley of flavours provided us with a diverse and enjoyable experience all in one bowl.
This was not in the menu when we were there, but we were told that it was going to be introduced very soon. Known as the Taiwanese Tower and priced at RM12.90, this was the Taiwanese version of the Fruity Tower. The top layer of the tower was grass jelly ice, followed by palm sugar ice in the middle and soya milk ice at the bottom. In between each layer was a bed of red bean. Barley, taro balls, pearls and sweet potato pieces can be found at the bottom and around the tower. We personally enjoyed this tower more than the Fruity Tower and would enthusiastically recommend it if you pay a visit.
A break from sweets led us to a couple of Pick Me Up’s savoury items. The Chilli Chic Quesadilla was priced at RM8.50. The minced chicken was soft and cooked until full of flavour. The taste of Cajun spice was prominent and left us wanting more!
Another good item for sharing would be the Chilli Fries. For RM8.00, we got a plate of fries along with minced chicken chilli on the side. Slightly different from the Quesadilla, this was served with melted cheese on top. It was a joy to eat the fries with the quality chicken chilli.
If one does not fancy the ice-based desserts, Pick Me Up offers frozen yoghurt as well. A bowl of frozen yoghurt comes with 3 toppings of your choice for RM6.50. In this instance, we had cornflakes, toasted oats and strawberry sauce as our toppings. It’s hard to go wrong with frozen yoghurt and the one from Pick Me Up lived up to our expectations. The portion was generous for the price. Fans of froyo, be sure to look up this establishment!
To round up the night, we tried the Nutella French Toast with Peanut, priced at RM5.50. We enjoyed the French Toast very much. It was not a combination of Nutella and Peanut Butter, but instead two separate French Toasts. The Nutella French Toast was sweet and rich. The peanut butter French toast balanced the sweetness out to perfection. These two combined were sinfully delicious, but we would gladly eat more of it any day.
As a whole, Pick Me Up has nailed the food aspect spot on. We genuinely thought the food was really good and enjoyed our time there. We would like to thank the friendly owners, Annie and Jared, for having us over that night. We look forward to coming back soon and we’d recommend Pick Me Up as a dessert place worth checking out.
