It started out with a single kiosk in The Gardens Mall in Mid Valley, but has now grown to cover three other locations (at the time of writing) around Kuala Lumpur and Selangor and word has it that the expansion operation doesn’t stop there. If such an independently owned business is able to expand in such a way, surely it must be doing something right, don’t you think?

Indeed, Sumptuous Desserts has been doing something right – offering us sweet-lovers with exactly what it says on the tin: sumptuous desserts. One cannot just walk past the kiosk without having a peek inside at the luscious desserts on offer.

The Durian Pancake, which has garnered Sumptuous Desserts the reputation it has today, is one of their best sellers and with good reason too. Freshly made each day, the pancakes are bound to be fresh regardless of which outlet it is purchased from. Only real fruits go into the pancakes, durian in this instance, ensuring an authentic taste free from artificial flavours.

The result was a fluffy pancake with an ever-enjoyable durian taste. The inside of the pancake was made up of cream and durian, both of which were light and not overpowering. This ensured that one did not tire of the taste of the pancake quickly and priced at RM10 for a box of six, a single person could very well eat it all until the last bite!

Not a fan of durians? Another popular choice is the Cempedak Pancake priced at RM8 for a box of 6. Everything remains as it was with the Durian Pancake, but the filling consists of cempedak instead. The Cempedak Pancake provides a strong cempedak taste as opposed to the light durian flavour of the Durian Pancake. Definitely something worth trying out for those looking for a less common but delightful dessert.

Another alternative is the Mango Pancake priced at RM10 for a box of 6. It has the lightest fruit flavour of the three pancakes and as the name suggests, it is made using fresh mangoes instead. However due to the unpredictable nature of mangoes, certain pancakes might be sweeter than others and some could be slightly sour as well. The Mango Pancake is nevertheless a very refreshing dessert thanks to its light flavour.

The pancakes are packed into similar boxes like the above and are easily identifiable: yellow for durian, orange for cempedak and green for mango. The pancakes obtain their colour from the juice of the fruits used to produce them, so one does not have to worry about artificial colouring.

Sumptuous Desserts offers more than pancakes though. Hokkaido Cakes (Durian) are priced at RM7 per box of three. Note that these are not your usual Hokkaido Cakes with cream, Sumptuous Desserts fills them with a durian flavoured cream instead.

The cake itself was soft and bouncy without being too sweet – an excellent sponge cake. The durian cream lent the cake a mildly strong durian flavour (stronger than that of the pancake), which was sweet yet had a very slight hint of bitterness which made it unique and delightful.

Sumptuous Desserts also offers Durian Cream Puffs at RM7 for a box of three. The durian cream used in the puffs was stronger than in the previous durian based items but still avoided being overwhelming and was not too sweet. The only downside was that the puffs itself was soft and did not possess the characteristics of a freshly-baked puff as it has to be refrigerated in order to maintain the freshness of the durian cream inside.
Sumptuous Desserts offers the public many choices in terms of dessert at reasonable prices. Above all, it tastes good not just for durian lovers, but for everyone else as well.
