Hokkaido Gantetsu Ramen

Posted by: Wen Ching In: Japanese Food

Being big fans of Japanese food and ramen, we went to the newly opened Isetan in One Utama to check the Eat Paradise area out. Two ramen restaurants were already opened at that time, and they were located next to each other. One of it was Menya Musashi Ramen and the other was Hokkaido Gantetsu Ramen. We randomly chose one to visit first as we know that we will be visiting the other one soon.

Interior, Hokkaido Gantetsu Ramen
We read from their menu that Gantetsu Ramen was originated from Hokkaido which was established in 1998. The restaurant focuses on using traditional recipe and ingredients such as miso, soya bean sauce and Japanese salt to create their “Great White Soup”. Differed from what we had in Yamagoya Ramen, which was pork bone soup based, Gantetsu Ramen’s was miso based.

Okonomiyaki Gyoza, Hokkaido Gantetsu Ramen
We had an Okonomiyaki Gyoza to start off with as we thought it was rather rare to see this in the menu. Priced at RM11.90, this dish was good but nothing too outstanding. The Gyoza was rather soft and moist on the inside while topped with Okonomiyaki sauce and Katsuobushi, or more commonly known as Bonito flakes. Nevertheless it was still a good snack to share.

Hokkaido Butter and Corn Miso, Hokkaido Gantetsu Ramen
Since the restaurant was well known for their miso soup, we ordered a Hokkaido Butter and Corn Miso to try. Priced at RM28.90, we found their serving to be slightly bigger than Yamagoya’s. The bowl of ramen was filled with corn, Char Siew, black ear fungus and a knob of butter and grated ginger. The soup was delicious, it was creamy but not too overwhelming whereas the Char Siew was thick and mouth-watering delicious. It was unique and of its own kind.

Hokkaido Tonkotsu Spicy Ramen, Hokkaido Gantetsu Ramen
Besides that, we also had a Hokkaido Tonkotsu Spicy Ramen for RM26.90. This bowl of ramen too, was rather delectable. The soup was rather spicy as we can taste the spiciness in it. A good option for those looking for something hot!

Hokkaido Tonkotsu Spicy Ramen, Hokkaido Gantetsu Ramen
Hokkaido Gantetsu Ramen was rather nice and springy. However, we preferred Yamagoya’s ramen as we thought it was tastier on its own.

Nevertheless this is still a fairly good ramen place if you fancy good ramen. We found their egg quite good as well, top it up with RM3 if you like semi hard boil eggs. Our next visit will definitely be Menya Musashi, we’ll keep you posted for more ramen soon!

ooo, the spicy one sounds good. i usually avoid ordering spicy soup ramen, cos i’ve always imagined that the spiciness will distract us from enjoying the flavor of the broth. but it sounds like it adds a delicious extra dimension to it 😀

Sean, oo, we totally understand what you mean. That’s the reason why we will usually order an original one and another spicy one so we get to try both. =) But yeah, we liked it spicy as well!

Baby Sumo, yeah, their Hokkaido Butter and Corn Miso was quite good, it’s worth a try!

Kelly, thank you! Yup, the Hokkaido Tonkotsu Spicy Ramen was indeed very good, you should check it out! ^^

The Yum List, yup, Gyoza is always a nice light snack before the mains. =)
