After hearing a number of compliments about Nihon Kai, we decided to give this place a visit since it was located rather close to where we live.

Reservations were not allowed and we arrived late on a Friday night for dinner. It took a while before we were seated. But fortunately service was fast and efficient.

Other than indoor seating, patrons can also choose to dine at the sushi counter or outdoors.

As mentioned above, service was speedy and food was served rather fast, even though the restaurant was quite packed. We had our first sushi served – Nihonkai Maki (日本海巻き) priced at RM26. The seaweed roll was generously filled with sashimi, crab stick, egg, pickles and fish roe. It was one of the better versions of futomaki we’ve had, very fresh and flavourful, and it was reasonably priced too, definitely worth a try!

The Nihonkai Sp Maki (日本海スペシャル巻き) was one of our favourites too. Priced at RM16, fresh salmon slices and julienne vegetables were wrapped with thin rice paper topped with fish roe and mayonnaise, sprinkled with tempura batter. Again, the maki roll did not fail to impress us, the combination was simply delicious, very juicy, fresh and crunchy too!

Craving for something cold for our main the other day, we ordered the Tenzaru Soba (天ざるそば) which was priced at RM13. Cold buckwheat noodles were served with tempura and their dipping sauce. It was simple and nice, a dish that we enjoyed all the time.

Pictured above was the tempura served with the soba. They were nicely deep-fried, not too oily, crunchy and juicy!

We also had a Chirashi Sushi Jo (ちらし寿司) priced at RM52. A variety of raw fish were served on a bed of seaweed and rice. The sashimi was very fresh and we were happy with the selection of sashimi too. The salmon sashimi and the scallops were my personal favourite, coupled with their properly vinegared sushi rice, it was fantastic! Our only complaint was that they could’ve provided us with more sushi rice.
Overall, food was very good and we were satisfied with their price and portion too. Do give this place a try if you like Japanese food, but try to be early to beat the crowd!
