Sushi King (すし金)

Posted by: Wen Ching In: Japanese Food

Back to KL food, this used to be a restaurant that we would visit many years ago before Sakae Sushi, Sushi Zanmai, Yo! Sushi and other new kaiten belt concept Japanese restaurant were established in Kuala Lumpur. Since we haven’t visit this restaurant for ages, we decided to go for it when we have no idea where and what to eat in Sunway Pyramid.

The outlook of Sushi King was still the same for many years. Though we’ve been to their outlets in KLCC and Mid Valley, we haven’t been to this one in Pyramid.

There weren’t many people even though it was dinner time. We took a table seat instead of the counter seat.

For our drinks, we had 2 warm green tea as usual. Their green tea was complimentary. Anyway, we had 3 types of sushi. Beginning with the beige plate, which costs RM3, was their inari sandwich. Salmon mayonnaise and cucumber were wrapped with sushi rice and sweet beancurd. It tasted alright, but not very outstanding. The presentation was terrible, they really should pay more attention on it. The pink plate was the chuka kurage which costs RM4. The seasoned jellyfish tasted quite good, appetising and chewy. Finally, the red plate which was the sake roll costs RM5. The cucumber was wrapped with vinegared rice and raw salmon and topped with fish roe. It tasted quite ordinary to us, and again, we were not satisfied with the presentation of the sushi.

Anyway, for our mains, we had a saba udon (鯖うどん) for RM11.90. The serving of the mackerel fish was quite generous, it tasted quite good too. But the serving of udon was slightly smaller than average. This noodle tasted quite average overall, nothing much that appeal to us.

Finally, we had an oyako don (親子丼), in which the steamed rice was served with chicken, egg and vegetables. The price for it was RM9.90. It wasn’t too sweet or bland, tasted fine but again, nothing too special about it.

There’re 3 things that we think that this restaurant really need to work on. First, the presentation of the food needs to be improved. Second, their service was very slow and not attentive, we have to walk over to them to place our orders. Third, they really have to repackage their restaurant as in adding new food or renewing their restaurant image. For these reasons, we will not be revisiting this restaurant for quite some time.

Well said, although in the olden days, I frequented this place quite often. There’s a lot of room for improvement now, but then again, the stuff’s really cheap!

Ling239, yeah, we hardly visit them now. I remembered they had the scallops promotion a few years ago, used to visit there often last time.

Joe, haha, yeah, Sushi King might not be so popular lately, will not be visiting them for some time.

Mimi, we guess this applies to most people too.

Lyrical Lemongrass, yeah, we do have to agree with you that their food is slightly cheaper than the others. But still, we would pay a little more for better quality food! :)

Ai Wei, yeah, haha, I still remember we used to visit this place long time ago! But anyway, we think they really have to improve.

Though I have seen these outlets many times, I have never been. Usually because the company I was with does not like sushi. Is it a place to dine solo?

4th, their rice is formed by machine, not by hand and it’s not sticky enough, I think they might be using local rice rather than Japanese rice. Spoiled the whole sushi. If want to eat sushi I rather pay a bit extra for some good sushi.

Durianberry, yeah, we guess a lot of people think so too. It’s not that popular nowadays.

Wmw, yeah, that’s what we think too. They have to do that to attract their customers.

Nic (khkl), yeah, they might be going for another direction in marketing as you said. Haha! We too, will pay a little more for better ones.

Squall, yeah, we guess that applies to a lot of people too!

Hazza, yeah, it’s ok to dine solo. Perhaps the sushi counter would be a good seat.

Simon Seow, yeah, you have a point! True, they should’ve used better quality sushi rice. Yup, we would do the same too, pay a little more for better sushi!
