One might think that working in the Gardens in Mid Valley would leave one spoilt for choice for food during lunch time. While true that the selection throughout the mall is good, the challenge lies in finding something good and affordable for one’s working-day lunch.
Fitting both these criteria is The Warung which as its name suggests, serves Malaysian fare which everyone would enjoy. Located on the first floor of Mid Valley near the KTM station entrance and Aeon as well, The Warung has become a steadfast favourite for lunch due to its good food and affordable pricing.
A good option for a working (wo)man’s lunch is the Indo Mee Burger Ayam, priced at RM6.90. Admittedly one plate of this is not the most filling thing around, but it’s good as a light lunch to avoid feeling drowsy at work after that! The Indomee here is fried briefly with marinated minced chicken and topped with a fried egg. The noodles were good with a hint of sweetness as is expected of Indomee and the minced chicken was flavourful and soft. This dish is a frequent order for us!
Another excellent choice would be the Soto Ayam, priced at RM8.90. This bowl of vermicelli was served with potato balls, sliced chicken, bean sprouts and peanuts. Whenever we feel the urge for something with soup, the Soto Ayam is definitely the thing to order! The soup was what sealed the deal for this item as it was fragrant and one could taste a good number of spices in it such as cloves and star anise. Best eaten with the black coloured chilli paste it was served with, the Soto Ayam always pulls us back for more!
The nasi lemak selection in Mid Valley is not great by all means. Thus, it is a good thing that The Warung can provide us with good enough nasi lemak to satisfy our needs. The Nasi Lemak Kari Ayam (Chicken Curry Nasi Lemak) is our preferable one out of the different types of nasi lemak they have to offer. The sambal here is sweet rather than spicy, but it was definitely enjoyable. The best thing in our opinion is the chicken curry due to the curry itself being fragrant and full of spices which distinguished itself from normal chicken curries elsewhere.
Lastly, a good choice would also be the Nasi Ikan Cili Padi (Birds Eye Chilli Fish with Rice). Here, deep-fried breaded fish pieces were served topped with a sweet and thick soy sauce and birds eye chilli alongside a portion of vegetables and plain rice. While it doesn’t look like much, this item packs a punch in terms of spiciness! It was simply enjoyable to bite into the generous amount of chilli while eating the fish with the rice. We found a good balance between sweet and spicy in this dish.
The Warung is a non-pretentious outfit which stays true to its name. It is firm favourite for lunch due to its good tasting food and very reasonable pricing. Another item of note which we have yet to try is the Nasi Tumpang which looks very appealing! Do check it out next time you’re in Mid Valley!
