While we may be a bit slow in conveying the news, one of the more recent eateries to open up in Bangsar Village would have to be Wondermama.

Located on the ground floor beside Plan B, Wondermama brings it’s take on Malaysian cuisine to the table.

Wondermama has a contemporary air to it, with a unique colour scheme as well.

It has been crowded on our past visits, but we managed to get a table without too much difficulty anyway.

By way of drinks, we tried the Macha Latte. Priced at RM7 for the hot version, it was not sweet and had a good, strong green tea flavour to it.

This was the Fusion Roti Bakar with Garlic Butter, Kaya and Tobiko, priced at RM4.50. We found the balance between the sweet kaya and the savoury garlic butter to be perfect and we enjoyed this twist on the traditional Malaysian roti bakar to be very enjoyable.

As for the mains, we tried the Special Seafood Maggi Mee Goreng. This dish was priced at RM14.90 and was served with squid, salmon, prawn, egg, mixed vegetables and onions fried in Wondermama’s special homemade spicy sauce. This was surprisingly very good. We thought the noodles also had a pleasant “wok-hei” flavour to it. Our only complaint was that the portion of noodles could have been bigger.

We also tried the Nasi Lemak 2.0 which was priced at RM16.90. The nasi lemak was served with sambal petai sotong, cucumber, nuts, anchovies, egg and a piece of Japanese-style fried chicken.

We liked the fried chicken, but found the nasi lemak to be lacking overall. The sambal just wasn’t satisfying enough and we found the dish to be a little too elaborate.

On another visit, we tried the Kampung Style Fried Rice. For RM15.90, the rice was fried with anchovies, petai, egg, long beans vegetable, chicken and beef bacon. We found it to be nice and fragrant. It was flavourful and rather enjoyable!

Wondermama has, in recent times, begun serving a variety of burgers with may be altered to suit Malaysian tastes. The one we tried here was the Chicken Katsu Burger which was a burger made up of a deep-fried chicken fillet, tomato, cucumber, lettuce, tartar sauce and tonkatsu sauce. It was priced at RM13.80.

However, one may choose to add additional toppings to any burger on the menu at a small fee. We were feeling adventurous that day and decided to add Kimchi and Birds Eye Chilli to our burger. The end result was an odd mixture which turned out very enjoyable. It had the right amount of spiciness to it and the slight sourness of the tonkatsu sauce made the burger very appetising!

By way of dessert, we had the Pisang de Goreng for RM6.90. Wondermama’s version of the classic deep-fried banana fritters came topped with whipped cream and ice-cream along with some marshmallows. I personally did not enjoy this much, but my better half found it to be very good.

On our several visits to Wondermama back during the Raya festive season, we were served with some complimentary kuih as well. Nothing too spectacular, but we thought it was a nice gesture from the Wondermama management.
Overall, we don’t really have any major complaints about Wondermama. Their take on classic Malaysian dishes may be different from what we are used to, but it’s definitely worth a try. We’ve enjoyed ourselves at Wondermama with the exception of the Nasi Lemak, so it may be worth exploring!
