After having a light bite in Pasteleria Escribà, we decided to explore the eastern area of Ciutat Vella where the Parc de la Ciutadella is.

As you can tell from the photo, we were blessed with good weather as it was nice and sunny! But remember to bring along your sunblock lotion to avoid getting tan or sunburn. The photo was taken from the top of the font de la cascada (a triumphal arch with waterfall and fountain). The baroque construction was designed by Josep Fontsère and the design was loosely based on the Trevi Fountain in Rome. The architect was assisted by Antoni Gaudí, at the time still a student. Other than the fountain, the park hosts the city’s zoo, the Parliament of Catalonia, a lake and some museums.

After sightseeing around that area, we made our way back to the Port Vell and La Barceloneta area. Again, we followed the advice of Lonely Planet and visited Restaurant 7 Portes.

Interior, Restaurant 7 Portes
The restaurant has a long running history and it has been established in 1836 as a café and converted into a restaurant in 1929. The restaurant is open everyday of the year and it has a number of different rooms to cater groups for different events. The interior of the restaurant is rather traditional with wooden panelling, tiles and mirrors.

Orange juice, Restaurant 7 Portes
Throughout this whole trip, I have been craving for orange juice a lot. So here is my glass of orange juice priced at €5.60.

Cargols de punxa, Restaurant 7 Portes
For our starter, we shared a cargols de punxa for €19.20. The sea snails were boiled and served in their own cooking juices. They were fresh and delicious, juicy and succulent as well, even better when dipped in their creamy garlic dipping sauce, which we enjoyed a lot.

Arròs negre, Restaurant 7 Portes
Paella is 7 Portes’s specialty. We were torn between choosing their noodles and black rice paella. Finally we decided to have the black rice paella, also known as Arròs negre, for €18.80. The rice was cooked with natural cuttlefish ink, which turns the rice black. Although this is not the most presentable dish around, the taste was amazing! The squid’s ink enhanced the seafood flavour and every bite was delicious. We loved it to the last bite!

Even though the restaurant has extensive seating, it is advisable to make a reservation in advance. The restaurant was very packed on the day of our visit with both locals and tourists. Service was fast and efficient. Check out their website to learn more about their history and menu.

What an awesome restaurant. Would love to try the sea snails .. and the Black rice paella looks perfectly black! wow:) great find..

Ciki: It was an awesome restaurant indeed! Definitely glad we found this place as the paella was probably the best we had out of all the restaurants.

Choi Yen: Hehe, can’t say much about how it looks. Not the best looking thing around, that’s for sure. Absolutely cannot fault its taste, though!
