Taipei Day 3 – Tamshui District and Ximending Night Market

Posted by: Wen Ching In: Taiwanese Food|Travel

We must have been exhausted on our first few days of our trip that we slept through breakfast and woke up during lunchtime.

Having read about Wan Lin Lu Rou Fan (丸林魯肉飯) on TripAdvisor before we came, we decided to have lunch there.

The restaurant was rather crowded during lunchtime. We took a seat and went to the counter to choose our dishes.

The Taiwanese sausage and chicken on the far left of the photo was good.

The minced pork rice was nice and flavourful. However, we find it a tad too oily to our liking. Overall, lunch was good and the restaurant was worth checking out if you’re in near vicinity.

After lunch, we took the Metro to Tamsui Station, which was the last stop of the Red Line. The Metro journey from city centre to Tamsui took around an hour. From Tamsui Metro station, we took a bus to Tamsui Fisherman’s Wharf. Bus Red-26, 836, or 837 will bring you to the Fisherman’s Wharf.

The weather was great and good for photography. Pictured above was the Lover Bridge of Tamsui. The bridge got its name since it was started on 14th February 2013.

We crossed the bridge and there were many restaurants and cafés located on the other end of the bridge.

It was a relaxing walk along the harbour, and also an excellent spot to appreciate sunset in the evening.

When we were done sightseeing in the Fisherman’s Wharf, we took the bus back to Tamsui Old Town, where the majority of the shops and the night market were located. A Po Tie Dan (阿婆铁蛋) is fairly well-known in Tamsui, these iron eggs were braised and dried for a few cycles until the egg white shrinks and turned chewy in the process. It was hard and chewy when eaten, quite interesting and worth giving a try!

We also came across the well-known sour plum drink in Tamsui (阿妈的酸梅汤).

This soup plum drink was made of salted pickled plums that have been cooked in syrup. It has an acquired taste that not all will enjoy, I personally liked it though, since I love sweet and sour drinks in general.

It was a nice stroll during summer, even though the weather was a little warm, we were grateful that it did not rain throughout the trip.

We were at the night market when sunset was approaching. Like any other night markets in Taipei, the night market has a lot of offer, local delicacies, street food, clothes and accessories, we had a great time shopping.

As it was approaching sunset, we quickly queued up for more snacks before settling down at a spot to view the sunset.

Deep-fried squid (花枝の烧) was also a very well-known street snacks in Taiwan. We bought a bowl of deep-fried squid for 100 TWD and opted for the original seasoning with pepper and salt.

It was absolutely delicious! I would say this is one of my favourite street snacks in Taiwan. The squid was huge, fresh and chewy while the outer layer was deep-fried to perfection, giving it a crunchy bite. Throughout the trip we never failed to have this when we saw it.

Finally we watched the sunset and left Tamsui shortly. We took the Metro back to the city centre and our final attraction of the night was Ximending night market.

I personally find Ximending the best night markets of all compared to Shilin and Shida, the reason being that I love the clothes and accessories more and it was less crowded compared to Shilin night market.

Shopping was fun and the next day we continued our journey to Jiufen, another famous attraction in Taiwan located in the mountainous area in Ruifang district. Please stay tuned for more travel updates!

First off I would like to say wonderful blog! I had a
quick question that I’d like to ask if you don’t mind.
I was curious to know how you center yourself and clear your
head before writing. I have had a tough time clearing my thoughts in getting my ideas out.

I do take pleasure in writing however it just seems
like the first 10 to 15 minutes are usually lost simply just trying to figure out how to begin. Any suggestions or
hints? Appreciate it!
