While we were still in Cardiff, one of our regular eating-out spots was Chimichanga. To us, it always delivered big and tasty meals!

Chimichanga, Cardiff
Located on the first floor of the St David’s 2 shopping mall, it was very convenient to pop in after a day of shopping or a trip to the cinema.

Interior, Chimichanga
The restaurant was brightly lit and always had a sizeable crowd whenever we were there. It was a good place for families and also affordable enough for students on a budget.

Nachos with Pico de Gallo, Chimichanga
First up, some appetisers. This was the Nachos with Pico de Gallo, priced at £3.75. The tortilla chips were crunchy and the salsa was fresh and cooling, yet ever so slightly spicy. Indeed an appetising way to start off any meal!

Jalapeno Bullets, Chimichanga
We also tried the Jalapeno Bullets, priced at £5.25. These were deep fried jalapeno peppers filled with cream cheese and they were served with chipotle chilli sauce. While not spicy, they did have some kick to them. The cream cheese was mild and each ‘bullet’ seemed to just melt in your mouth.

Flame Grilled Piri-Piri Chicken, Chimichanga
This was the Flame Grilled Piri-Piri Chicken. For £10.95, one would get a piece of chicken breast, chargrilled with a choice of either lemon and herb or hot and spicy piri-piri sauce. It was served with jalapeno coleslaw and seasoned house fries. The chicken was grilled very well as the chicken breast retained its moisture and was not too hard at all. The spicy piri-piri sauce was very appetizing and something we enjoyed.

Tiger Prawn Burrito, Chimichanga
We also tried the Tiger Prawn Burrito, priced at £11.50. This item was probably one of the most value for money items on the menu. We had a huge burrito, filled with prawns, jack cheese, sautéed onions and peppers. It was garnished with sour cream, chives, guacamole, salsa and tortilla croutons. On top of that, it was served on a bed of Mexican rice. We think this item is best shared!

Mexican Paella, Chimichanga
A good choice is the Mexican Paella. Priced at £9.95, it consisted of chargrilled marinated chicken breast, tiger prawns, chorizo sausage, sautéed peppers, onions, and peas cooked with Mexican rice. The rice was very flavourful and strong with Cajun spice. The accompaniments were generously distributed in the rice. This was definitely one of our favourite things to order!

Barbecue Baby Back Ribs, Chimichanga
A must-have for us was the Barbecue Baby Back Ribs, priced at £13.95. This rack of pork ribs was marinated in barbecue sauce and chargrilled. It was mildly sweet and the pork ribs were always soft and a delight to bite into. It was served with seasoned house fried and jalapeno coleslaw. A very fulfilling meal indeed!

For us, Chimichanga is a good choice for Mexican delights in Cardiff. Our experiences there have always been good ones and we will definitely miss it now that we’re back in Malaysia! For more information on the restaurant, do check out their website.
