The Speakeasy Restaurant & Bar

Posted by: Wen Ching In: Western Food

In the month of January, we were kindly invited by the Speakeasy Restaurant & Bar for a food review on their 2012 Valentine’s menu. Together with Chris and Christine and other fellow bloggers, we attended the review. We drove to Bangunan Ming Annexe after work, even with a GPS, the building was rather difficult to locate and it took us a while to arrive there.

Interior, The Speakeasy Restaurant & Bar
The restaurant serves classic Western and Asian cuisine. However, we understand that the restaurant will undergo a renovation in this coming March where they will be serving modern European and classic Malaysian food in a modern restaurant within an old area. The restaurant at the moment was very dimly lighted, romantic and quiet, a perfect place for a romantic candlelight dinner on Valentine’s Day.

Strawberry Bellini, The Speakeasy Restaurant & Bar
Speakeasy’s Valentine’s menu consists of a five course dinner with one bubbly cocktail, priced at RM150 per person. We started our dinner with a glass of Strawberry Bellini each. The cocktail was sweet and nice, with a light hint of alcohol taste, we find it suitable for the ladies.

Fresh Canadian Oyster and Sydney Rock Oyster Shooter, The Speakeasy Restaurant & Bar
Our first course of the night was the Fresh Canadian Oyster served with pernod pickled fennel and moluga caviar and a Sydney Rock Oyster Shooter drowned in a basil infused very bloody Mary. The Canadian Oyster was absolutely delicious, it was very fresh and silky smooth, the pickled fennel gave it an extra appetising taste, making it a great start for our dinner!

Double boiled free range chicken and mushroom consommé, The Speakeasy Restaurant & Bar
Next up was the double boiled free range chicken and mushroom consommé served with chicken and scallop terrine, enoki mushroom and tempura baby asparagus. The consommé was one of our favourite courses, it was intensely flavoured with chicken and scallop essence, making it naturally sweet and addicting. Another bonus point about the soup was that it was light, so it didn’t fill us up for the dinner.

Home tea smoked salmon, The Speakeasy Restaurant & Bar
Our third course was the home tea smoked salmon served on purple potatoes slices, Alaska crab crème fraiche, ikura pearls and organic petit sprouts. This was probably our favourite dish during the night. The smoked salmon was so soft and flavourful, coupled with the crème fraiche and ikura pearls, the salmon had a melt-in-your-mouth effect, which we both fell in love with.

Pan Seared Halibut, The Speakeasy Restaurant & Bar
For our mains, we had a choice of Pan Seared Halibut or Red Wine Braised Ribeye. We had one of each. The Pan Seared Halibut was perched on rainbow zucchini spaghetti, topped with spicy tomato and orange chutney and rockmelon champagne nage. It was a nice and simple dish, the fish was fresh and delicious when eaten on its own. We personally enjoyed the zucchini spaghetti a lot, which provided a nice crunch to the dish.

Red Wine Braised Ribeye, The Speakeasy Restaurant & Bar
The Red Wine Braised Ribeye was served on a truffle scented mash and topped with seared foie gras, grenadine onion marmalade and merlot glace. The foie gras was well done, though it lacked that ‘melt-in-your-mouth’ sort of texture that would have made it perfect. The braised rib eye was a pleasant change from your typical seared steaks, but note that the texture of the rib eye was tougher than that of seared or grilled steaks. Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable experience especially when coupled together with the sweet onion marmalade and the merlot sauce.

Chocolate Rose, The Speakeasy Restaurant & Bar
Finally, we had our Chocolate Rose as our fifth and final course. Very delicately presented in a rose shaped tart, the dessert was served with passion fruit and lime infused honey dew. It was very beautifully presented, unfortunately we thought it was a bit too sweet to our liking.

Overall, we would recommend this place to couples for a quiet and romantic Valentine’s dinner. We enjoyed the ambience and the songs played during the night and the food was very good too. Special thanks to Mr Ramesh and Mr Nelson Kok for hosting us with warm welcomes and excellent food! Hurry up and make your reservation for Valentines Day if yo haven’t done so!
